Having two children to transport doesn't have to mean double trouble when choosing a double stroller. The thought of a double stroller may bring to mind visions of a massive double stroller bumping through doorways or focing pedestrians off the sidewalk. Fortunately, modern double stroller designs are reasonably compact, with focus on manoeverability, durability, and ease of use.
There are two basic styles of double stroller: the side-by-side double stroller and the in-line double stroller. Each double stroller style has specific pros and cons. For example, a side-by-side double stroller allows each child to be face forward and to have a clear view. Side-by-side double stroller models can also be easy to steer and have ample basket storage, but can be impossible to manoever through some doorways or aisles. Conversely, an in-line double stroller offers better handling in narrow spaces, but you may find yourself bumping over curbs or steps with your in-line double stroller. Double stroller configurations vary from both forward-facing seats, to inward-facing seats, to settings that allow you to snap on a step for a third child to ride along on the rear of the double stroller. Check your double stroller manual for specific instructions on the features and limitations of your double stroller.
Here are some tips to help you find the right double stroller:
1. Be sure you need a double stroller! A double stroller is a big investment, and sing a double stroller can be challenging. Budget-wise parents should think about how much use a double stroller would get. For example, you may not need a double stroller if one child is significantly older, or if you don't often get out with both children.
2. Try out each style of double stroller before you decide which kind of double stroller you prefer. Manoevering a double stroller is not the same as working with a single, so go to a store that will let you test the floor models to see how each double stroller feels, with children in it, if possible. Walk around with the double stroller, fold it, lift it, and measure it to see if the double stroller will fit in your vehicle. Often, a side-by-side double stroller will be easier to lift and handle than an in-line double stroller.
3. Some versions of the double stroller allow you to use an infant carrier in the front seat, but because the seat needs to be reclined to accommodate the carrier, space is restricted in the rear (jumper) seat of some double strollers.
4. Contact a twins/multiples group to see what kind of double stroller experiences the group has had, and which features work or don't work for specific double stroller models. Similarly, research double strollers online to find out how others have reviewed the double stroller models you are considering. Ultimately, choosing a double stroller comes down to personal preference, but getting advice from other parents who have used a double stroller can be very helpful.
