Finding the Best Armoires

Roomy and easily accessible, armoires are an excellent way to store your baby's clothing and most-used items. Armoires usually have a large upper cabinet with hanging rod and shelving, as well as spacious drawers below – all of which makes armoires ideal for a nursery or child's room. Armoires can replace several other pieces of furniture including dressers. Space in armoires for children can be maximized by adding small fabric shoe holders or hooks to the insides of the doors. These can be used for shoes, clothing, toys and other items.

Armoires for everyone
Armoires come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials, so it is easy to find armoires that fit your taste and décor. Some people might love the traditional feel of ornate, solid wood armoires, while others prefer armoires with a modern plastic children's motif. Armoires can be both inexpensive or very expensive, so buy armoires according to your budget.

Choosing the best armoires
While shopping for armoires, think about how the armoires will be used in your home. Look for armoires with adjustable shelving, or armoires that allow removal (or addition) of hanging rods for added versatility. If you are looking for armoires specifically for a child's room, you might want to shop for armoires with a funky design and bright colors. These armoires do not have to cost a lot (think Ikea), and will work for your child as he or she ages. More classically designed armoires might be appropriate if the armoires will be moved to other rooms in the house later. Antique armoires found at tag sales or auctions can be particularly good deals, and may have high resale value. Old armoires can be refinished, and if they have damaged door panels, can be restored with pebbled plastic (or glass) inserts, or other materials like fabric or screening to give your armoires a custom appearance for very little cost.

Safety notes for armoires
Armoires, even smaller armoires, are dangerous to children if left unsecured. All armoires in a home with children should be secured to the wall with safety straps and screws or bolts to prevent the armoires from tipping over. Children love to climb, and armoires can be a target for their adventures.

Armoires meant to house baby or children's items should be properly 'aired out' to eliminate any chemical smells from paint or stain, and ideally, armoires should be lined with cabinet paper to avoid any contamination from substances that may leach from the armoires' shelving. This is particularly important for wooden armoires.
