Reasonably priced, but needs improvement

by Melissa LeVesque 2006-04-03

I like the idea of all this in one case (and it's hard to complain at this price), but some of these things would be better bought separately. We've either traded up or found a substitute for most of the things in here. Here's what I found: Item #1) The case is fine, but things do fall out all the time. #2) I haven't used the tweezers yet, but the magnifying part sounds nice. #3) The nail clippers were WAY TOO SHARP. We cut my daughter's skin more than once (but one was serious enough that we considered a hospital trip!) Now we use my regular clippers, and I haven't gotten her skin since. The soft grip thing actually make them slide around more, so it was tougher to cut where you wanted to. Trust me, it's easy to clip skin on fingers that little! #4-7) The emery boards are very handy, but any emery boards would work. #8) We got a different thermometer; this one was too slow. Faster ones are more expensive, but they're worth it for a sick squirmy baby. #9) I haven't used the medicine dropper, but the one time she did need one, I actually asked at the pharmacy desk at a grocery store, and they gave me one for free (then later I found out we had this one.) #10-11) The brush and comb are nice. I'm sure they can be purchased separately from the kit for less. #12) My daughter's only 7 months old, and has no need for a toothbrush for awhile, since there are no teeth (and even when there are, I believe you wipe them with gauze, not a toothbrush for awhile.)
Basically, although this kit had tons of things that could be helpful and it wasn't very expensive, we have either gotten an upgrade on the things we use (thermometer), or have found other things that would work just as well (regular nail clippers, free medicine dropper.) I'm certainly not saying that you shouldn't get one, because I'd hate to say that and then have you find that you needed it. If you get it for a shower gift, great; if not, you can find substitute items just as easily.

a good place to start, but why rebuy everything?

by Sandra J. Hansen 2006-03-23

Not knowing really how many of these tools I was going to use with my first baby I registered for this 12 piece care kit. It was a good place to start, in learning what I wanted out of each of the products....but after I used them I realized I'd have to rebuy most of the items because they didn't work as easily as I'd hoped!

What I liked most about this set is the hospital choice nail clipper with magnafiying glass. They are sharp and give a good cut for little squirming feet and hands. I liked that it has the big handle that flips over to squeeze instead of a little piece of metal to hold on like most clippers. I lost these clippers after 2 years use, and then bought the safety first clippers that have a plastic handle but you still have to squeeze holding the small metal part. These cheap kind (.99) are difficult to use, and also they didn't cut my childs nail, just bent it. I am going to go out and buy the other kind (3.99) that were included in this set.

The little brush, comb, and toothbrush, and nail files are nice, the brush is soft. These are good tools to let your child start grooming on thier own.

The reason I am rating this a 3 is because the items do not stay put in the travel case. It definately is a pain to close and shut when the items do not stay in place. Perhaps if the case would have been more user friendly, I would not have lost my clippers! I would invest in a better thermometer that doesn't take so long to read. Instead of buying a syringe for medicine like this one has-I didn't like it. I would ask my pharmacist or pediatrition for a freebie when using medicine that doesn't already have one included. Also, just buy an adult size, good tweezer. The tweezers in this kit just were cheap fillers.

I think if the price for this kit was 7.99, it would be a fair price. Otherwise, buy the safety first-hospital choice clippers with magnifying glass, and piece together the rest of the kit yourself with things that really work.

Be practical

by Safety Czar 2005-09-26

I have seen this product( and others similar to it) . As an RN,we encouraged prospective parents to refrain from being drawn in by the "cuteness" of items that are geared only to be sold, not to be useful. Although each category of item in this kit is certainly useful, and some essential, it is far better to spend your money on the items purchased separately. In this way, you can check for quality and longevity. Put together your own kit.

Averge Products, Poor Casing

by E Tevis 2005-09-01

This was given to me as a gift, and although I have used it, it would not be my first choice in infant care. The nail clippers are mediocre at best, I understand they shouldn't be sharp for an infant but I have to exert tremendous pressure just to clip my son's nails. The syringe is too hard of a push to administer medicine and the tweazers couldn't pull a hair out of my head - they have absolutely no grip. I have never used the brush, comb or toothbrush (I have others) but they do make for good entertainment when diapering! The case is cumbersome and of poor design. Everytime I open it - everything falls out!
