Description:
With over one and a half million trade and mass-market paperback copies in print, The Complete Book of Breastfeeding is one of the recognized classics in its field. Now it has been completely revised and updated, and dovetails perfectly with the recent major policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued nursing for at least one year and as long thereafter as mother and child desire. In addition to incorporating the new AAP guidelines throughout the book, the Third Edition of The Complete Book of Breastfeeding draws on the very latest research from prominent scholars and practitioners in the field. It presents new information on how breastfeeding offers protection against various diseases for both child and mother; new discussion of the positive impact of breastfeeding on a child's cognitive development; a greatly expanded section on available support systems and their importance; guidelines to help a mother-to-be choose a hospital or birthing center with breastfeeding-positive policies; and a new section on signs of baby's adequate milk intake, with charts. Plus new and expanded sections on nutrition for lactating mothers, the mother's social life, the role of the father, the nursing working mother, how to express, store, and offer breast milk, and how to wean your child. The Complete Book of Breastfeeding is the warm, accessible, and authoritative guide for every new mother. Author Marvin S. Eiger, MD., is a nationally known pediatrician who practiced in New York City for 30 years. The Third Edition of The Complete Book of Breastfeeding was co-authored by Sally Wendkos Olds.

HIGHLY recommended
by Homeschooling Mom of 3
I bought this book before giving birth to my 1st baby, thinking it might be handy to have around some day. After my daughter was born, this book was one of the most important resources I had to get me through a very difficult nursing relationship. The book provided tons of information on the topics I most needed to know about, and lots of ideas on how to handle various challenges. My lactation consultant was over an hour from my house, so between this book and phone calls to her (and a patient and supportive husband and mom!), my daughter and I made it through those first few, very tough weeks. We ended up nursing until she weaned herself when I got pregnant with #2, who I nursed for 15 months. I used the book again and again as a reference as new issues arose during our nursing months, and I recommend this book to every expecting mama I know who is even remotely considering breastfeeding.
What I like best about this book is the authors' overall attitude toward b/f'ing. They're very supportive of b/f'ing, obviously, but I felt that, if at any point I had decided to call it quits and resort to bottles, I would not have felt "condemned" by this book for my decision. I know that sounds kind of silly now, but when you're a new mama with loads of hormones raging through your body, hormones whose very purpose is to ensure that you don't give up when the going gets tough with that baby, even the "opinion" of a distant author who has never met you and likely never will, can make a huge difference in your ability to make sound decisions. I commend these authors for presenting both sides of the issues and trusting their readers to make the best decisions possible in each unique situation.
